Last week, when Microsoft rolled out KB5037765, many admins using PCs that didn’t have the English (United States) language pack downloaded reported getting a 0x800f0982 update error. At the time, Microsoft quickly acknowledged the bug and confirmed that a patch should soon be released. It’s finally here!
The latest Windows release, KB5039705, addresses this particular bug. The release notes for the update read,
This update addresses a known issue that is related to the English (United States) language pack. If your device does not have it, installing KB5037765 might fail. The error code is 0x800f0982. But this issue might affect devices that do have that language pack. In that case, the error code is 0x80004005.
Given that it’s an Out-of-band (OOB) update, there are no other enhancements or features except the patch. Microsoft recommends that you install it right away and restart the PC for the changes to come into effect. Then, you should be able to install the May’24 security patches, KB5037765, without getting the 0x800f0982 update error.
As for downloading the OOB update, there are three methods:
- Windows Update: The KB5039705 update should appear when you search for updates on the PC.
- Microsoft Update Catalog: You can manually download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog and then install it.
- Windows Server Update Services (WSUS): Another option is to use WSUS for mass deployment of the update.
